Resources
Toastmaster / Host
The Toastmaster is the meeting's director and host. A member typically will not be assigned this role until they are thoroughly familiar with the club and its procedures.
For detailed instructions please refer to the Host Guide.
General Evaluator
Taking on the role of General Evaluator improves critical thinking, organizational skills, time management skills, motivational and team-building skills. Please evaluate everything that takes place during the club meeting. As General Evaluator, you take notes and report on all club proceedings to evaluate things such as timeliness, enthusiasm, preparation, organization, performance of host, speech evaluators, Fillerword Counter, Grammarian and Timer. etc.
Grammarian
Taking on the role of Grammarian improves vocabulary, grammar, critical listening skills and evaluation skills. The Grammarian plays an important role in helping all club members improve their grammar and vocabulary. The task is to monitor language and grammar usage of all speakers, noting incomplete sentences, mispronunciation, grammatical mistakes, non-sequiturs, malapropisms, etc.. The "Word of the Day" is introduced by the Grammarian that helps meeting participants increase their vocabulary; the role holder displays the word, gives a brief definition with a visual aid and prepares a sentence showcasing how the word should be used. He/she also notes who uses this word or any derivatives thereof correctly or incorrectly during the meeting.
Time Keeper
Tip: Download the "Toastmasters International" smartphone app. For online meetings, you may also download these screenshots as backgrounds to help the speaker keep the time. It is perfect for timing.
Keep in mind, after the red light our speakers still have 30 seconds to finish their speeches.
- Table topics 1-2 (max. 2.30 min)
- Evaluation speech 2-3 min (max. 3.30 min)
- Most prepared speeches 5-7 min (max 7.30 min)
The time keeper also fulfils the role of the vote counter.
Fillerword-Counter
Taking on the role of Fillerword-Counter improves observational and listening skills. The purpose is to note any overused words or filler sounds used as a crutch by anyone who speaks during the meeting. Words may be inappropriate interjections, such as and, well, but, so and you know. Sounds may be ah, um or er. As Ah-Counter you: Record overlong pauses, overused words and filler sounds relied upon too often by all speakers. Examples include: and, but, so, you know, ah, um.
